How to Design and Customise Your Own Oak Garage

Our oak garage building kits are beautiful and durable and can add significant value to a residential or commercial property. They are also extremely versatile. Not only because we offer a variety of sizes and configurations including single-storey and multi-storey designs, but also because of the myriad ways the space can be utilised. Still, customers often want to know if our oak garages can be customised to, for example, fit a non-traditional space or dovetail with other structures on the property. And the answer is “Yes”.

How to Design and Customise Your Own Oak Garage

Many of our customers want to know if our oak garages can be personalised to match their functional or aesthetic needs and, as we said above, the answer is “Yes, they can be.” There are several ways you can go about this.

First, you can simply choose cladding, windows, doors and roofing materials that set your oak framed garage apart from others. Unless you have something unique and specific in mind, you would want your cladding, roofing, windows and other materials to harmonise with the exterior building materials on your house, or in the case of a commercial application, the main building.

If working within our existing framing configurations does not provide the level of customization you are after, our team can work with you to design and fabricate an entirely customised, bespoke garage. Our designers and engineers are the best in the business and will ensure the final product meets or exceeds your most optimistic expectations.

What About Planning Permission?

In many cases, an oak garage can be built without having to obtain planning permission. That’s because in many locations they fall under the rubric of “permitted development”. However, in the case of a customised oak garage that is bigger or taller than one of our standard kits planning permission may be required.

Also, if yours is a listed property it is almost certain you will need planning permission. Likewise, if your property is located within a Conservation Area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), National Park or The Broads in Norfolk or Suffolk counties. Finally, if your plans call for using part of the interior to create permanent living space you will almost certainly need to get planning permission. If, however, the finished space will only be occupied by the occasional overnight guest, planning permission may not be required.

That said, it is always a smart move to discuss your oak garage plans with your local authority ahead of time. That way there will not be any unpleasant surprises awaiting you after you begin building your custom oak garage.

Conclusion

If you are wondering “How can I customise the design of my new oak garage?” the good news is that you have a wealth of options. And remember, if you would like a bespoke garage built to your specifications or to serve a specific purpose our team of designers and engineers will work with you to ensure the final product fulfils your needs to a T.
